How to Wire a Garage Door Keypad

If you're using a hard-wired garage door keypad: Connect the two wires from the button switch on the keypad to the switch/program box inside the garage. Find a good location outside your garage for the keypad and drill a hole of at least ½ in from the outside to inside. Feed the cable inside. Attach the keypad (not too tightly) to the outside with screws, allowing moisture to flow behind it. Inside the garage, disconnect power and connect the control box to the opener's push button terminals with two 18-24 gauge, low voltage wires. Strip off a small amount of insulation from the two wires, insert and screw them into the terminals in the control box. You don't have to worry about wire polarity; either end can be installed in either terminal. After this is done, install batteries, insert the keypad's cable and mount the control box to the wall. Reconnect the power and program the keypad. Note: Some keypad models have four wires instead of two. If that's the case, refer to the product manual for further instructions.

Are Keypads Universal?

The simple answer to "are keypads universal" is that some are and some aren't, and if you have an older garage door opener, a universal garage door keypad may be your best option, because they work with nearly all openers. Look on your garage door opener's control box for a manufacturer name and model number. Brands like LiftMaster make keypads that are compatible with their older model openers. But if you can't find a model number or brand on your unit, universal keyless entry devices give you the freedom of easy access, and they support many or all brands and models.

How Much Does It Cost to Install a Keypad?

For do-it-yourself enthusiasts, the only cost is the keypad ($30-50). However, if you'd prefer to use a professional, it shouldn't cost much more than $50. If you're having them install a garage door opener (approximately $300), some may add the keypad at no additional cost. You can also cut your costs by doing it yourself and choosing a wireless keypad, making it a breeze to install. The industry is moving toward wireless devices, and all you'd need to do in this case is install it on an outside surface, add batteries and program it.
