Strip Door Benefits, Sizes Installation & More

The Importance of Strip Doors

Production and manufacturing industries have employees constantly on the move. With so much going on at once, it is important to put safety first and ensure nothing slips through the cracks. Vinyl strip doors help streamline this constant motion and increase safety while blocking unwanted noise, debris, pests and more.

What is a Strip Door?

A Vinyl Strip Door (or Strip Curtain) is made from overlapping clear or safety-colored PVC vinyl strips that cover an opening in place of a traditional door. With heights up to 25 feet and practically limitless width, nearly any opening can have one installed.

The purpose of a Strip Door is to divide and seal sections of a facility and protect against unwanted breaches. Whether you need to control temperature, have a see-through traffic door, or are just dividing your facility, a Strip Door is a great and cost-efficient option.

The Vinyl in Strip Door is made with PVC plastic, which is a very durable material that is resistant to weathering, chemicals, and does not conduct electricity. This combined with PVC’s lightweight and fire resistance makes it a popular choice in the construction industry, especially when it comes to Strip Doors. PVC is created with salt and oil. Saltwater is put through the process of electrolysis to produce chlorine, which is then combined with the ethylene obtained through oil to create vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). The molecules of VCM are then polymerized to form PVC resin. This resin is then mixed with various additives to create a unique PVC compound. PVC can be either rigid or flexible. Our Strip Doors utilize a flexible variety of PVC to allow for easy movement through the vinyl PVC strips.

Benefits of Strip Doors

Strip Doors offer multiple benefits besides physically dividing rooms.

The overlapping vinyl PVC strips of Strip Doors create a barrier that stops pests like rodents and birds from infiltrating your facility. The strips also prevent heated and cooled air from escaping, which cuts energy costs. This is invaluable in food service, where refrigeration is vital and walk-in deep freezers are frequently left open. Employees around loading docks will also benefit from protection against the outside elements.

Strip Doors cut the cost of air filters and reduce pollution by blocking dirt, fumes, smoke, dust and other airborne particulates from spreading, which helps maintain clean rooms. The vinyl also functions as a sound barrier that reduces acoustics and other noises.

Strip Doors save time. If a warehouse entry point is frequently used, waiting for a rolling door to open and shut is time wasted. The flexible plastic of our heavy-duty Strip Doors negates this issue while providing visibility through the clear vinyl to increase safety and help employees see oncoming traffic. Our doors are UV stabilized to prevent strips from yellowing, allowing the door to maintain its appearance as well as efficiency.

Strip Door Qualifications & Durability

Our Strip Doors meet CPAI-84 and California State Fire Marshal Requirements for flame resistance along with USDA, FDA, and Agriculture Canada requirements. They also comply with OSHA noise regulations.

In addition, our Strip Doors can operate in a range of high and low temperatures (-10ºF to 140ºF) and are also resistant to inorganic acids, bases, and salts to protect against spills.

Which Facilities Benefit from Strip Doors?

The adaptability and lengthy benefits of Strip Doors make them a great option for many facilities. They are most commonly used for traffic doors, conveyor openings, shipping and receiving loading docks, temperature control rooms, welding screens, hood enclosures, fume containment, spray booths and much more!

How to Install Strip Doors

Our plastic Strip Doors have standard strips with a thickness of either .060 inches or .120 inches. The strip width is available in 6, 8, 12, or 16-inches.

Action Industries offers strip material in bulk rolls and installation kits. Strip Doors can be easily installed inside a doorframe’s header, or directly into a wall. See the video or instructions below for a handy guide:

  1. Prior to installation, you will need to measure your door’s opening to find the width and height of the entry point. Then, order the appropriately sized Strip Door. You will need a wrench or socket wrench, a pair of scissors, a pen or pencil and tape to install the Strip Door.

  1. Roughly 24 hours before installation, lay out your materials and unroll the vinyl strips to allow them time to uncoil.

  1. Locate the header mount bracket (made from 14-gauge galvanized steel with mounting bolts pre-studded).

  1. Mark your mounting place, using the holes in the mounting bracket as a guide to mark or pre-drill the mounting holes.

  1. Secure the bracket with heavy screws in all available mounting holes.

  1. Trim strips if needed, ideally to a quarter inch above the floor.

  1. Mount the strips by taking the uncoiled vinyl strips and placing them into metal studs, allowing for either a partial or full overlap. A full overlap means that each strip will cover half of the adjacent strip, while a partial overlap will differ based on the size of the strips

  1. Secure the strips by sliding the face plate over the pre-studded bolts and begin fastening it with the included nuts. Use a wrench or socket wrench to tighten the nuts down and make them snug. Repeat for the remaining strips.

How to Maintain and Repair Strip Doors

The Vinyl strips can be easily cleaned with vinyl cleaners.

While repairing a damaged rolling door can be an expensive undertaking, Strip Doors are far more inexpensive and less demanding in the event the product is damaged. If a vinyl strip needs replaced, it can be individually removed by unscrewing the bolts holding it before installing the replacement strip in its place. This simple process allows the door to be quickly fixed so your business can resume far quicker than if you were to wait on a mechanic to fix a rolling door.
