LiftMaster Series Breakdown

LiftMaster residential operators are designed for easy installation and upkeep for homeowners. The operators have versatile designs to work in virtually any garage depending on their series and model. When choosing an operator for a customer, it is best to know which style of operator will fit their needs and from there decide on a series and model.

Operator Styles

LiftMaster operators come in multiple styles and can be either overhead mounts or wall mounts. Not every job requires the same build, which is why Action stocks both along with their accessories! Whether you need a new powerhead for an operator or require a full replacement with railing, Action has you covered. We sell powerheads and their rails in easy to purchase kits as well as individually for your convenience.

Overhead Mount Operators

Overhead garage door operators are installed on a customer's garage ceiling (overhead) and use a rail system to control the door. The style is affordable and compatible with many garage sizes and door types.

Overhead mounts can have either belt drives or chain drives. Chain-drive operators are generally the more affordable option, while belt-drives offer quieter operation due to having a rubber belt instead of a rattling chain lift a customer's garage door.

Homeowners looking for a basic garage installation and don’t care for a massive setup extending across the ceiling will benefit from an overhead operator, while those who value aesthetics should opt for wall mounts.

If your customer wants to invest in an overhead mount, you’ll need perforated hanger angle to hang the operator from the ceiling, and Action offers bulk pricing and multiple sizes and finishes for heavy-duty hanger angles to suit the specific needs of any installation.

Wall Mount (Jackshaft) Operators

Wall mount operators (also known as Jackshaft) are installed on the wall beside the garage door where they connect to the door's torsion bar or shaft to control its movement. Jackshaft operators are often more energy-efficient and save space thanks to the lack of railing that overhead mounts require.

Customers who intend to use their garage as a Mancave or She-Shed will prefer the discreet nature of the jackshaft, while the free space can also be used for storage when space is limited. Jackshafts also have fewer moving parts than traditional overhead mounts, which makes them quieter and great for homes with bedrooms directly above the garage where the noise during operation may be an annoyance. Jackshaft operators can have a higher price tag than overhead mounts due to the quiet operation and space saving feature but can be well worth it to customers who value sleep and extra storage.

LiftMaster Residential Series and Models

LiftMaster currently has three series of residential operators: Contractor, Premium, and Elite. Each series ships with a safety sensor kit (sensor 041-0136) and a mounting bracket (041-0155-000) to make installation easy! They range in price and what features are included to serve customers from a variety of backgrounds.

Contractor Series

The Contractor series serves as the basic, classic LiftMaster operator. They include essential features for reliable operation such as smartphone control, a front lighting system, myQ technology and a 4-year motor warranty. These operators are the most budget-friendly option for customers thanks to the lack of higher-tech features such as a camera or operation timer. A popular model is the 81650,  thanks to its inclusion of a battery backup that carries a one-year warranty.

LiftMaster 81602
LiftMaster’s 81602 is a chain drive operator with a DC motor and battery backup that makes it SB-969 compliant for those in California. The 81602 offers Wi-Fi connectivity and myQ compatibility. It has a front light that is 1 x 100 watts and ships with an 893LM 3-Button Remote that controls up to three garage door operators. With a strong T-rail system and multi-function wall control panel, it's a reliable upgrade for homeowners on a budget.

LiftMaster 81600

This DC-powered chain drive operator has Wi-Fi and myQ compatibility, and soft start/stop capabilities. It includes a four-year warranty on the motor and a one-year warranty on its parts, which is an excellent value for a smart operator. The 81600’s addition of a T-rail system and multi-function wall control panel is another great bonus.

LiftMaster 81650

The 81650 operator offers 1/2 HP AC chain drive power with Wi-Fi and myQ capabilities. It features a front 100-watt light and can manage up to 12 remotes. It includes a four-year warranty on the motor and a one-year warranty on its parts as a testament to the operator’s quality. The 81650 ships with an 893LM 3-Button Remote that controls up to three garage door operators.

LiftMaster 81550

With a 1/2 HP AC belt drive motor and Wi-Fi support, the 81550 is a solid and affordable operator. Belt drives are known to be a quieter operator system compared to chain drives, which makes them excellent in residential areas where noise is a concern. The operator  has myQ technology so a customer can control their door through an app on their phone and a T-rail system. Its multi-functional wall control panel is another great feature along with the operator's four-year warranty on the motor and a one-year warranty on parts. The 81550 ships with an 893LM 3-Button Remote that controls up to three garage door operators.

Premium Series

Premium Series operators are a step up from contractor models and have a wider selection of features such as quiet operation thanks to having a belt drive and myQ smartphone controls. Models like the 84505R include an integrated camera, unlike the more basic contractor models. The Premium series comes with either a Dual LED Lighting System (for the 84505R and 84504R) or front to back lighting seen on the 83650-267. Both offer superior lighting when compared to the front lighting of the contractor series. Customers looking for extra features to make an operator more accessible but do not need the market’s best should invest in a premium model.

LiftMaster 84602

The LiftMaster 84602 chain drive offers a balance of strength and technological features with a DC 485LM battery backup, chain drive operation, T-rail system and Wi-Fi connectivity. With a one-year warranty on its dual LED lighting and a lifetime warranty on its DC motor, your customer can enjoy this operator for years.

LiftMaster 85870

It comes with an I-Beam rail system, two-speed sprocket, and chassis support. A solid choice for demanding residential applications, the 85870 also has a five-year warranty on its parts and a lifetime motor warranty.

AC Versus DC Motors

Another important factor to discuss with your customer is whether they want an AC motor or a DC motor for their garage door operator. AC operators are generally more affordable, though they can be larger, heavier, and louder than DC motors. They generally do not have battery backups, which could be an issue for customers in areas prone to power outages.

DC garage door operators are quieter, more energy efficient, and lighter than AC operators. They typically have battery backups, which guarantee that a customer can access their garage during a power outage, which is a great benefit in areas where natural disasters occur. Customers looking for a reliable, quality operator no matter what nature throws at them as well as wanting to save money in the long term through energy efficiency will find the higher price tag for DC operators well worth it.
